Despite having fewer than 100 permanent residents, Ereikoussa once sheltered 13 Jewish residents during WWII, with locals protecting them from Nazi forces, a heroic act recognized decades later. The island's name reportedly derives from the wild heather (ereiki) that carpets much of its landscape, bursting into purple blooms each spring. According to local legend, the island was once a favored hideout for pirates who would conceal their ships in the protected bay.
